We would like to welcome you to our first newsletter in 2022.
Last year, we started the regular dispatch of technical information. The focus is always on the topic of environmental compliance. Our goal is to inform you promptly about the latest developments so that you can always keep track of the jungle of laws, regulations and obligations in Germany, Europe and worldwide.
We start the new year with an article about product recycling in France. New regulations have come into force there on January 1, 2022, which must be observed.
If you export to other European countries, our other news should also be of interest to you.
We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter and look forward to your feedback.
With best regards, Deutsche Recycling

Specifics and obligations for manufacturers and (online) retailers
On January 1, 2022, there were some legal innovations in France. (online-) retailers, manufacturers and service providers must prepare for new rights and obligations. There is also an increased effort in other areas. Click on "Learn more" to find out which areas are affected, which deadlines apply and what needs to be observed!
Greece: Mandatory registration for packaging
In July 2021, a new law for manufacturers of packaging came into force in Greece. In terms of regulations for packaging producers, Law 4819/2021 replaces the previous Law 2939/2001 of 2001.
The Greek Packaging Take-Back System confirmed that the main changes concern the extended producer responsibility of mail order companies and online platforms.
How are producers affected by the new law? From now on, non-Greek mail order companies are also obliged to register as producers of packaging with the Greek take-back system. Without a registered office in Greece, an authorized representative must be appointed for this purpose.
Do I have to register my company? If you sell directly to Greek end users, you must register not only for WEEE and batteries, but also for packaging.
Do you need an authorized representative to trade in Greece? Our staff will be happy to help you!
Italy: Application of the eco-label postponed
On December 30, 2021, the Italian government published Legislative Decree 228, Article 11 of which postpones the application of the labeling requirements for packaging (an alphanumeric code identifying the material(s) from which it is made and the instructions for its correct disposal as waste) until June 30, 2022.
In addition, it has been decided that products that do not bear this marking can still be sold until the stock is exhausted. The condition is that these products enter the Italian market before July 1, 2022.
Electrical appliances in Great Britain
Who must offer their own take-back solution?
Are you a manufacturer of electrical and electronic equipment used in private households?
Do you sell online to end users?
Do you sell electrical products stationary in the UK worth less than £100,000 per year to end users?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, you must offer your own take-back solution or you can join the DTS take-back scheme.
Dealers who sell more than £100,000 worth of electrical goods in a retail store in the UK cannot participate in the DTS and must offer their own take-back.
Germany: Extended mandatory deposit for single-use beverage containers
Since 2022, all single-use plastic beverage bottles and all beverage cans in Germany are subject to a deposit. From 2023, reusable containers for food and beverages for takeaway and ordering are to help avoid waste, save raw materials and protect the environment.
A transitional period until 2024 applies to plastic bottles containing milk beverages. All beverage cans will also be subject to a deposit from 2022 without exception. Non-refillable beverage containers already on the market may still be sold without a deposit until July 1, 2022 at the latest.
