last week we held a webinar with the topic "the amendment of the german packaging act" in german language. Following the webinar, we will focus on the packaging act in our Newsletter 10/2021. 

Evaluations have shown that the number of warning letters in relation to the Packaging Act is steadily increasing. Find out what you can be warned for as an online retailer, what you have to watch out for and how you can protect yourself.We also inform you about the rather unknown § 3a UWG, which is supposed to help ensure equal opportunities.

Austria's ambitious goal of significantly increasing the collection rates for packaging has been dampened. The figures after the first six months of the year are at the previous year's level.

The UK Government confirms that businesses will have an extra year to start using the new product safety marking - the UKCA label.

UKCA Label: More time to implement

Companies have an additional year to apply the new product safety labeling to most products launched in England, Scotland and Wales. The government announced this on August 24th. The UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) label enables the UK to have control over its goods regulations and maintain the high product safety standards expected in the UK.

The UKCA label replaces the product safety labels that were used before "Brexit", such as the CE mark.

Since many companies had to master great challenges during the pandemic, the government has extended the transition period for affixing the label by another year until January 1, 2023.

The ARA (Altstoff Recycling Austria) half-yearly balance sheet shows that households were able to collect a total of 531,960 tonnes of packaging waste in the first six months of 2021. Looking at the past year, it becomes clear that this result corresponds to the previous year's result.

After significant declines in January and February due to the corona lockdown, the collection increased by June compared to the previous year. At 89,000 tonnes, the collection volume in the area of light packaging (mainly plastic packaging) was roughly the same as last year (minus 0.1%).

Austria's goal of significantly increasing the collection rate (similar to the battery recycling rate) therefore seems difficult to achieve in 2021. However, the upward trend after the lockdown shows that an increase over the previous year is possible for the rest of the year.
