Spain: New obligations from 2025 under the Packaging Act
Since the beginning of 2023, the packaging law in Spain has made manufacturers and companies that sell packaged products to customers in Spain more accountable.
The new obligations from 2025
From 2025, new labelling requirements are intended to help improve waste separation and recycling in Spain by providing clear instructions on packaging as to how and where it should be disposed of.
Labelling of packaging with the waste container: All packaging must be clearly labelled with which waste container it should be disposed of in. This labelling helps consumers to dispose of the packaging correctly and promotes recycling.
Labelling for different, easily separable materials: If packaging is made up of multiple materials that can be easily separated (e.g. a plastic yoghurt pot with a paper wrapper), each component must be labelled separately. This ensures that consumers put each material in the correct waste bin.
Manufacturers have the freedom to customise the disposal information on the packaging. However, the "RECICLA" symbol from Ecoembes is the most widely used.
Reusable packaging: For reusable packaging, the reusable status and the deposit and return system symbol must be clearly and comprehensibly indicated.
Compostable packaging: Compostable packaging must be labelled "no abandonar en el entorno" or "do not litter" and indicate certification in accordance with DIN EN 13432:2001.
Disposable plastic packaging: Single-use plastic packaging must be labelled in accordance with Directive 2020/2151.
From 2025 , the licensing obligation will be extended to commercial and industrial packaging.

France:
New EPR regulation on Amazon.fr
Amazon hat kürzlich eine wichtige Vorschrift für den Verkauf bestimmter Produkte auf seiner französischen Plattform amazon.fr eingeführt.
This new regulation concerns compliance with extended producer responsibility (EPR) and obliges Amazon to ensure that all sellers fulfil the corresponding obligations. A key part of this regulation is the collection of the EPR registration number (Identifiant Unique/Unique Identification Number) for each product category covered by the EPR guidelines.
Affected product categories
The new EPR regulation applies to a large number of product categories. These include
Household packaging
paper
Electrical and electronic appliances
Furniture and textile decorative elements
Textiles and shoes
Batteries and accumulators
Chemical products
Commercial packaging used by catering establishments
Construction products or materials
Toys
Sports and leisure articles
DIY and garden products
Mineral or synthetic oils
Requirements for sellers
Sellers who already have a valid EPR registration number for one of the above categories must submit it via the Amazon REP Compliance Portal by 30 June 2024. This measure serves to ensure compliance with EPR regulations and to continue selling products on the platform.

France: Triman logo mandatory on new product groups
The Triman logo has been mandatory on recyclable products and packaging in France since 2015. It helps consumers to recognise the correct disposal method. Products with the Triman logo belong in the recycling or waste paper bin, while products without this logo belong in the residual waste.
Some new product groups will be added in 2024 and 2025
Decorative textile products (furniture EPR): until 25 August 2024
DIY and garden products: until 6 June 2024
Toys: until 6 June 2024
Building materials (for consumers): until 28 March 2025
Since January 2022, electrical appliances and their packaging have also been subject to labelling, and since June 2023 this also applies to furniture.

In a joint statement, the bvse, BDE and GftZ associations have criticised the EU Commission's current draft legislation on extended producer responsibility (EPR) for textiles.
While the associations support the planned uniform and qualitative standards for the collection, sorting and recycling of textile waste in principle, they still see a considerable need for change.
The associations are particularly critical of the planned exemptions for micro-enterprises from participation in the national EPR system and the concept of "geographical proximity" when sorting textiles. They argue that all companies, regardless of their size, should be integrated into the EPR system in order to ensure fair competitive conditions and support the objectives of the EU waste hierarchy. In their view, the current formulation of the concept of "geographical proximity" is too vague and could lead to inconsistencies in implementation.
Another key point of the opinion is support for the European Parliament's proposed amendment to shorten the implementation period for the national EPR for textiles from 30 to 18 months. This should help to quickly establish and implement an effective and sustainable circular economy for textiles.
