Since January 1, 2025, all EU member states are required to implement separate collection of textile waste.
This is part of the EU initiative to promote the circular economy and reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry.
Some countries, such as the Netherlands, France, Hungary, and Latvia, have already taken specific measures to implement this obligation. These range from the introduction of municipal collection systems to funding programs for textile recycling.
Under the extended producer responsibility (EPR) framework, textile manufacturers will be accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products โ from collection and sorting to reuse and recycling. The costs associated with this will be used to build and improve recycling infrastructure.
